Akismet does it! Comments are open again!
It turns out I was wrong regarding Akismet’s poor spam filtering capabilities.
I realized my version of WordPress was rather old, and so was the Akismet plugin.
To solve my 200 daily spam problem, I simply upgraded WordPress and the Akismet plugin. Best of all, it only took 15 minutes, including backup of data files, config, and DB.
note: It helps that I have a test server (macbook) with an exact duplicate of my “live” WP installation.

I _just_ upgraded my blog from WP 1.5.2 to the latest version last night. Much more enjoyable now that there is active plugin and theme development on the my platform of choice again.

haha! great minds think alike ;)
I haven’t had a chance to play with WP 1.5 so I have no idea what I was missing :D
