A new server, and more on backups
Some of you might have noticed this blog was inaccessible for the last 3 days… well the location where it was previously hosted had an unreliable network connection (possibly caused by the spike in traffic), so I was forced to move my site elsewhere.
I chose to go with Media Temple for various reasons but it’s too early for me to comment on their service… maybe in a few months from now.
What’s really ironic is that 2 days after writing about the importance of backups, I fell victim to a backup that wasn’t even accessible. All the blog articles/comments were still on the inaccessible hosting server and could only be retrieved 3 days later. This made me realize the importance of also backing up data that’s NOT on my computer (gmail, blog database, statistics log files).
Unfortunately it might be difficult to automate that process, but it’s something to look into.
Let’s just hope this doesn’t happen again.
